Internal medicine – what is?
Internal medicine is medicine in which internists, or general practitioners, diagnose diseases and treat people with a very wide range of health problems and illnesses. Once a doctor completes an internal medicine residency, they are subsequently referred to as internist. An internal medicine doctor usually treats only adults, but our clinic has a multidisciplinary focus and Dr. Starkman can treat people of all ages.
What are general internists useful for?
Internal medicine physicians are uniquely skilled to provide primary care and follow patients through their adult lives. General practitioners may also work in rehabilitation centers and long-term care facilities.
Internal medicine physicians are trained to provide:
- Diagnose and treat a wide variety of symptoms and conditions
Provide expertise on the condition of the body
Make recommendations for a person’s health and lifestyle. - Support patients throughout life
Assistance with mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety caused by abnormal brain activity, chronic illness or hormonal imbalances.
What kind of education do internal medicine doctors receive?
Doctors first earn a bachelor’s degree and attend medical school for four years and then complete a residency program, which usually lasts three years. During their training, these doctors receive their medical license and become board-certified in internal medicine. Also, an internist may choose a subspecialty, each specialty requiring one to four years of additional training, depending on the subspecialty. Solutions to most medical problems are learned by these physicians during academic training and practical residency training.
