Internal medicine – what is?

Internal medicine is medicine in which internists, or general practitioners, diagnose diseases and treat people with a very wide range of health problems and illnesses. Once a doctor completes an internal medicine residency, they are subsequently referred to as internist. An internal medicine doctor usually treats only adults, but our clinic has a multidisciplinary focus and Dr. Starkman can treat people of all ages.

What are general internists useful for?

Internal medicine physicians are uniquely skilled to provide primary care and follow patients through their adult lives. General practitioners may also work in rehabilitation centers and long-term care facilities.

Internal medicine physicians are trained to provide:

  • Diagnose and treat a wide variety of symptoms and conditions
Provide expertise on the condition of the body
Make recommendations for a person’s health and lifestyle.
  • Support patients throughout life
Assistance with mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety caused by abnormal brain activity, chronic illness or hormonal imbalances.

What kind of education do internal medicine doctors receive?

Doctors first earn a bachelor’s degree and attend medical school for four years and then complete a residency program, which usually lasts three years. During their training, these doctors receive their medical license and become board-certified in internal medicine. Also, an internist may choose a subspecialty, each specialty requiring one to four years of additional training, depending on the subspecialty. Solutions to most medical problems are learned by these physicians during academic training and practical residency training.

I'm so glad I found Dr.Starkman for our family. I'm a hairstylist and my wrist was sprained after picking up something heavy I was worried I would be out of commission for weeks . My wrist was lifeless, I couldn't even open a drawer. After one visit with Dr. Starkman I was able to go back to work next day with strength. I recommend him to all my clients. He is the best Doctor for all your needs !

Our Family of six has been with Dr. Starkman and his team since Dr. Elvove retired. Dr. Starkman is extreamly knowledgeable and is always ready to try what works best for each one of us individually. If one treatment doesn't work he is willing to continue to find something that will. In which, the end result has help to possibly avoid unnecessary hopital surgeries and problematic recovery processes. His natural first approach is something we greaty appreciate. He takes the time to explain the benefits to my growing (late teens-early 20's) children to help them understand the importance to health healing.

Love going here. Always the best experience. We had given up almost completely on having quality and affordable health care. Osteopathic healing arts has provided our family very affordable access to health services. We were in a position where we couldn't afford health insurance because we make too much money (crazy, right?), and this was the perfect option for us. Highly recommend. Would do more stars if we could.

I've found Therese to be a fabulous practitioner. She really cares about her patients and goes the extra mile for them. I love that she uses functional testing to discover the root cause of the issue. She has vast knowledge and uses lifestyle and nutrition to complement other treatments. Become a member in the practice, your future self will thank you.

Dr. Starkman is truly dedicated to provide patient-focused and personalized healthcare. I brought my entire family here with multiple health issues and I was impressed how much time he and Therese, NP spent with each one of us to really hear our stories and help us find the best options towards wellness! Working every day in healthcare field myself, I haven’t met so passionate practitioners that genuinely care about you as a patient and want to help. The entire office stuff is very kind and attentive to all your needs. This is what the primary care model should be everywhere!

So impressed by Dr. Starkman that I drive there from Chicago. The cranial sacral bodywork is beyond compare. I’ve had structural issues go on for years and months with other practitioners that he was able to stabilize in a couple sessions. I have paid significantly more for far lesser care with other practitioners. Can’t get over how much time he spends with patients and the enthusiasm he has for figuring out solutions for both structural and disease-based issues.

Covid-19 Information

COVID-19 infection can be a significant concern when you need to visit a medical facility. While there is no way to guarantee you will never contract the virus, here’s some information to put your mind at ease:

    • We see an average of 7 patients per day compared to 30-50 patients per provider, per day in a traditional practice setting.
    • A maximum of two medical personnel are present daily.
    • A maximum of two office staff are present daily.
